Elwus Has Left the Building
I am delighted to announce that Elwus Has Left the Building has been selected for the anthology "Merigan Tales", which has been published by Founders House Publishing ( http://www.foundershousepublishing.com/2016/12/merigan-tales-stories-from-world-of.html ). Thanks to John Michael Greer for his wonderful book "Star's Reach" (also available at FHP) which is the basis for this new anthology.

DeleteOh, good job! It's impressive how much detail the story includes, yet none of it feels unnecessary or slows down the flow. One thing I was clear on: if Keri was at Versity in Melumi, why does she mention Anarba? Is that where she's from originally? Is there also a Versity in Anarba (as there is in the 21st century) or just in Melumi?

DeleteI enjoyed this very much. The "Too-frayed shoes" touch was just hilarious, and I have had similar experiences to Luri's with the overly-religious aspect of the schooling.
ReplyDeleteI checked for the kinds of misses you mentioned and found in the first paragraph about Keri, "just passed her 20" which should be "past"; among the Elwus artifacts "...his pocket..." which I wasn't sure if you intended; and uncertainty who was saying what in the conversation between Luri and Keri in bed.
I visited Graceland several years ago, and was surprisingly touched. I have family near there. I studied graduate level linguistics in Ann Arbor, too.
Thanks, Pat! I appreciate your catching them. I did mean the "pocket" just because it sounded so absurd, but maybe it doesn't work.
DeleteI did the story first because I was amused by JMG's elwuses, and also because I was around the corner from Graceland when they announced Elvis' death. My friend had just offered to drive us past the walls where, he said, we'd see "nothing" - we might have seen the ambulance! It was chaos in the city that night and as a Yankee, I was quite overwhelmed. So I have a soft spot in my heart...
Good story! Couple things: first, you use the "old" spelling of Memphis instead of Memfis in paragraph two. And second, while I don't have Star's Reach in front of me at the moment, I am almost positive that "elwuses" is the canonical plural form of "elwus", rather than "elwii". I suppose Master Hips could be using made-up faux-Latin plurals to make himself sound more edumacated, but I feel like Keri should know better at least and should be using the less pretentious "elwuses" instead when she is the viewpoint character, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Troy, for catching the Memphis - I use dictation software and couldn't convince it that Memfis was correct. ;-) On the elwii - I wasn't sure if it was gonna work, but weirdly enough, Elvis impersonators are called "Elvii" - whodathunkit?? So I tried for the "official" and scholarly (Keri) plural versus what regular people would say... but if it's a distraction, I can pull it. I'll ask JMG.
