Now I want to know what happens next! There is the germ for a novel here. A few nitpicks: I assume when you say Chandra only had a son, you mean Jayda. Also, if Tonto is Toronto on Lake Ontario, that is quite a stretch to get to from Lake Michigan. Or is Tonto another town and I am wrong here? If not, may I suggest a few lines explaining travel in the North. Within the world of this story that location makes no sense. Look at a map.
